Long Horns

It is raining outside and I am going to have to hunt in it in about two hours for prep work. I was thinking about Jack Wilson today and his belief in Long Horns.

Jack Wilson used to have an interesting theory about the largest rams that came from Chitina Glacier Country.

He used to get a look like he was lost in thought and then he would talk about them.

Long Horns were Dall Rams that were longer in body and had thinner limbs. They stayed right near the snowline year around. They would ...

Sheep Rifles

Everybody has their opinion of the perfect sheep rifle. Light trim accurate.

A mature dall ram is about the same size and weight as a mature person so you don't need a monster magnum.

Many sheep hunters use 243s or 257 Roberts for their sheep rifles. The most important concern is that you can accurately use your rifle out to 300 yards minimum. Jack O'Connor wrote books about use of 7X57 and 270 winchester and you can bet that these are two of the most popular sheep rifles made. This ...

Gear Part 2

Well lets continue.

1) packs.

The eternal battle of titans.... internal vs. external frame packs.

Internal frames....

Really if you are a starting backpack hunter a large internal frame pack that you use alot is very handy.

1) Arcteryx Bora- Canandian. Expensive but very nice.

2) Osprey Argon- Custom fitted to your hips.

3) McHale Customs- This is like a the rolls royce of packs and can cost a cool $1000 with bells and whistles. They are legendary but made of unobtainium.

4)Marmot ...

This forum needs stuff so I am going to start with my views on gear. I will work on what is most important and what you should build up over time.

1) Boots- This is the most important piece of gear a sheephunter needs to buy. Buy the very best. There are four brands that fly and these are leather, gortex with rubber rands. Plastic is another area and we might get there on another post.

1) Hanawags- Built in Germany. Rated to be the best by the Germans. They are available at Lathrop and ...

Proposal to Eliminate Plugging Program

Rationale for the Alaska FNAWS Proposal #74 (Board of Game number) to eliminate the plugging program for some Dall rams in Alaska:

First, the plugging requirement is inconsistent and confusing across Alaska. Plugging of all sheep (or even all rams) harvested is not required. Plugging is only required where there are horn size restrictions, basically for full-curl rams. This means plugging doesn't include all the sheep or even all the rams harvested in Alaska. In the "Anchorage ...
